  • Family Guy Season 16 Episode 7 Review: Petey IVFamily Guy Season 16 Episode 7 Review: Petey IV

While I appreciated the satire on Family Guy Season 16 Episode 7, there's only so much Russia/Trump talk I can endure before I pull all my hair out. Maybe I have the "eh" affliction like Peter did when Putin explained how Russia not only rigged the last election, but all previous American elections. Mess with the election, who cares. Mess with football, well, now you've got my attention. Well, it got Peter's attention. I could care less about football. So, the question is if that's how apathetic we've become or are we all just tired of hearing about the election that will never go away that we just tend to ignore it for something much more interesting? We have become so overwhelmed with stupidity on every level, it's easier to just retreat back into our mundane lives than have to deal with and do something about any of the problems at hand. Even if we wanted to do something, what are our options? Because, you know, the #resist movement has been so effective. Let's all just stand in front of Trump Tower and give it the middle finger because that makes a big difference, doesn't it?  And all the attention we give to Trump's idiotic tweets just empowers him to continue all his nonsensical ramblings.  Putin may be Trump's best friend, but behind his back, Putin's laughing his ass off at us. Out of everything that Family Guy threw at us on "Petey IV" the best part was Trump's text to Putin. So sad that a guy who talks like this (we heard it with our own ears) was elected to the highest office in the land. Another segment worth noting was the Polaner All Fruit commercial and explanation and then the Russian version with meat jelly even though it wasn't in commercial form. And you had to laugh at Peter saying the Russian DVD he picked up at the mini-mart was in terrorist language.  While Peter was off fighting Putin in Russia for messing with football and having head injury-induced hallucinations that had him dancing with the Russian leader in the ring to Lionel Ritchie (there is a significance to the whole "Say You Say Me" song used here. Think about it), Brian had his own adventures on the other side of Quahog. In other words, Brian was just being his scummy self.  You'd think after being cast out for a misinterpreted Tweet that Brian might rethink his life and try to make a change for the good, but throw a woman into his path and he just can't help himself. Who do you think is the worse offender on this show? Brian or Quagmire? Brian was late on rent, and he was getting no help from his old family, so he got a job at a suicide hotline where he met Martha and immediately felt the need to get to know her better. Peter: So what do you do for fun around here? You got DirectTV?Putin: We have Time-Warner.Peter: You have HBO?Putin: We have Starz.Peter: You have ESPN?Putin: We have FOX Sports 1.Peter: That come in HD?Putin: 420D.Peter: You got --Putin: Everything you say, I say something little bit worse.Peter: You got Simpsons?Putin: We have Family Guy.Peter: Ah. I did it to myself. Permalink: Ah. I did it to myself. Added: November 19, 2017 It's getting harder and harder to feel sorry for Brian when his behavior keeps disintegrating, and his behavior sunk to new levels this hour. Is this really the character we were so outraged got killed off a few seasons ago that he had to be resurrected by Stewie's time machine? Is he really that desperate that he feels the need to jerk off to the picture of the mother of the woman that rejected him? And pictures of her crying at a funeral no less. And why isn't Brian wearing pants anyway? This is such a weird show. But the whole point of what he did to Martha was that it reminded me of all the sexual harassment/abuse stories coming out of Hollywood. The only thing I kept thinking of was Louis C.K which is ironic considering he was on Family Guy Season 16 Episode 1 well before his recent downfall.  I also had to scratch my head at Martha saying she thought Brian's unwanted attention was a "compliment" after she was originally offended by it. Is this a slam against women for changing their mind and sending mixed messages or against men for being stupid in the first place and then not learning their lesson after the fact? Brian ended up screwing Martha anyway by planting drugs in her desk. Nice way to shut someone up about sexual harassment. Could this be a reference to Rose McGowan's allegations? But this episode had to be finished before that controversy surfaced, right?  It's all very uncanny and really makes you wonder how much Seth MacFarlane really knows. • Keeping Up with the Kardashians Season 14 Episode 8 Review: Close to HomeKeeping Up with the Kardashians Season 14 Episode 8 Review: Close to Home

Ignorance sure is bliss, isn't it? Keeping Up with the Kardashians Season 14 Episode 8 follows Kim while she explores the homelessness epidemic in Los Angeles, as she continues to be the only Kardashian-Jenner looking to use their power to make a difference. I don’t want to be naive anymore, and I just want to use my platform to get other people involved, and I really do want to learn and figure out what we can all do to fix this problem. Kim Permalink: I don’t want to be naive anymore, and I just want to use my platform to get other people... Added: November 20, 2017 Even though I, personally, don't necessarily believe Kim has fully gotten past her naivety, she is making great strides, and it is absolutely wonderful to see. It's so important to see someone with Kim Kardashian's power bringing attention to issues that affect millions of lives, like Planned Parenthood and now the homeless, and hopefully she continues to explore life outside of her bubble. Unlike the Planned Parenthood tribute in a previous episode, Kim's entanglement with learning about the homeless population in L.A. and educating herself lasted an entire episode, which is what I'd like to see more of going forward. From this experience, I’ve learned that it’s just not that simple. Kim Permalink: From this experience, I’ve learned that it’s just not that simple. Added: November 20, 2017 The few minutes at Planned Parenthood weren't enough for anyone to really learn anything they couldn't already online, but this captured the epidemic in a new light, and actually gave those affected a platform to express how their lives are going. And bless Kim Kardashian-West for finally realizing the power her family has been given and using it for something good. It's so fulfilling to see her realizing the influence she holds in the world, both financially and socially, and realizing she has the ability to bring attention to important things. And if you're one of those people who still "hate" the Kardashians for being a "waste of fame," look at what Kim is doing now and tell me your opinion isn't changing. As much as anyone could, Kim has really grown over the last decade and she's truly become a better person than she was before. That said, it's quite disappointing to see what her sisters were doing during this time. While all three were present for their trip down Skid Row memory lane, only Khloe and Kim went to the shelter to actually educate themselves about the growing number of homeless people. My dad used to drive us down Skid Row when we were little to show us that the rest of the world doesn’t live how we lived in Beverly Hills. Kim Permalink: My dad used to drive us down Skid Row when we were little to show us that the rest of the... Added: November 20, 2017 It looked like Khloe couldn't make it to Kim's trip to see the councilwoman, as she said she would go if she were in town, but it's just another instance of them taking their power for granted. First of all, is Kourtney completely tuned out from the outside world? I understand not getting news from online sources which spew garbage about your family, but the news in general? Kourtney could barely lift her eyes from her phone to care about the people on Skid Row, unlike Kim and Khloe, and she didn't even bother to tag along to see the shelter. Kourtney is the worst case of this family using their power to elevate themselves above everyone else. While the rest are still tuned in with the world (and Khloe and Kim are actually beginning to realize to expanse playing field to use their abilities to help), Kourtney has completely isolated herself and she really just doesn't care. It's sad to speculate what this family could do if they all worked together to add some good to the world, but we'll never see it play out because there will always be a Kourtney standing in Kim's way and trying to get her back in her luxurious bubble. Any way, the comedic side of the episode was very much about Kris, which is bizarre on its own. Let’s just make Kris Jenner so uncomfortable... it’s fun. Khloe Permalink: Let’s just make Kris Jenner so uncomfortable... it’s fun. Added: November 20, 2017 As someone with a terrible memory, I can see why Kris would feel the need to hire a scribe. It's hard to remember everything, but Kris took it a little too extreme, as usual. Khloe's side is definitely the right one, because wow, how uncomfortable were those moments with the scribe typing their every word? The comments both made about the other to make them uncomfortable as the scribe typed their conversation were a little strange, and Kris crying at her own joke was a very Kris Jenner thing to do, but it was just all-around weird. Khloe may not have taken the correct apporach to make Kris realize the error of her ways, but it was the most effective, and it's time everyone stops doubting what Khloe can do when she's committed. Too bad she wasn't as committed as Kim to educating herself about real-life issues, like the growing homeless population in Los Angeles, California. • Ghosted Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Ghost StudzGhosted Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Ghost Studz

The other dimension just doesn't seem as exciting when you have Adam Scott sporting a fake ponytail the entire time.  But the very familiar TV show aspect was a reminder of why Ghosted continues to be such an entertaining show, especially with the way the characters and the humor balance out with the mystery of the week. On Ghosted Season 1 Episode 7, Leroy was dealing with a slight work adjustment where he doesn't get to enjoy what comes from his job when technically the job doesn't even exist. Meanwhile, Max and Leroy deal with a pair of actors working on a show that uncovers paranormal activity.  The case this time around was strong enough to keep the story interesting without falling back on the characters too much. It just so happened though that the characters also managed to have arcs that were captivating and really funny. This made the episode one of the best, and it would only have been better if there was more time to focus on the other dimension.  It all had the potential to be much scarier, and it was a world that could be explored for a while before it felt boring. Out of all the weird adventures that Max and Leroy went on so far, a dimension where they can't find their way out right away and where murderous shadows lurk is pretty much the winner.  Also, this show that explored all these hauntings sounds like something worth checking out if only for the ''spot the fake effects'' game. Leroy: Name a pizza place.Max: Domino's Permalink: Domino's Added: November 19, 2017 Leroy had a refreshing issue of a new job where he is accomplishing so much but can't exactly have anyone else know that. It did come off as selfish at first with all perks that he kept describing.  View Slideshow: 11 Terrible Episodes of Great Shows It wasn't until he shared what it felt like working as a mall cop that it made sense. The Bureau and all that it does is important, yet nobody will ever know that except for the people working hard every day to make sure nothing strange harms the world.  Leroy's past as a cop focused on helping others but that was more exposed, and there is nothing wrong with him liking that people knew what he did. Leroy is doing great and has gotten far, being proud of that is not shameful and is actually very relatable.  Sounds like they are really in trouble. Should we help them or...? Max Permalink: Sounds like they are really in trouble. Should we help them or ... ? Added: November 19, 2017 Max probably had other stuff going on, but I will never get over that hair that I was meant to pretend I didn't see standing out the way it did. Seriously though, a ponytail is far from a disguise when it looks like the way it did on Max. His student reappearing in his life when he is posing as a crew member on a show is a step down for sure. I didn't understand why Max's student made it seem like he hit rock bottom because he was working behind the scenes on his own show. Being a professor is important work too, but if Max wasn't undercover and actually decided that his passion was something else, so what? Although having two stoned dudes that don't even know half the time what is real and what isn't set up a great backdoor excuse for everything that happened.  View Slideshow: 17 Amazing Bottle Episodes of TV In a way, there weren't any witnesses to worry about, and those guys got themselves an experience worth describing on their show. Max: Wait a second, you watch Doctor Who?Leroy: I watched one by accident when I was flipping channels. Permalink: I watched one by accident when I was flipping channels. Added: November 19, 2017 Barry disappointed me with the way he tried to get his chair. The woman told him she would try to make it happen, but it wouldn't fit into her schedule that exact day. Barry decided to order her around, and he got exactly what he deserved. If he had asked nicely, maybe he would have gotten an upgrade and not ended up in a bean bag chair with everyone disliking him. The bean bag chair was a great idea though and should have been an option from the start. There is nothing softer than stretching out on the floor; Barry might even be the luckiest guy in the office now. View Slideshow: 13 Shows That Will Get You Through The Walking Dead Hiatus But really, going forward it would be great to see more of Barry but not in a mean way. He is at his best when he is his funny and helpful self instead of bossy and unaware of the trouble he caused himself in a matter of seconds.  Max: Something touched it. Leroy: What was it? The Devil? Permalink: What was it? The Devil? Added: November 19, 2017 What did you think of the episode? What was your favorite part and what could you do without? • NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 8 Review: This Is What We DoNCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 8 Review: This Is What We Do

Finally, an episode that moved along the narrative. We got to meet Nell's older sister, caught up with Kensi's nemesis Asakeem and found up what Hetty has been up to on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 8. Yup, definitely less wheel spinning this time. First, the case of the week, which didn't make sense to me. That's not a requirement, but it can be useful. A group of jihadists blew away a coyote and the people he was smuggling in, along with a couple of Border Patrol agents. Why? I'm still not sure. The team strung together a bunch of rumors about various militants gathering in Los Angeles. At first, the thought was that they were going to attack Camp Pendleton. Then they settled on the jihadists pursuing Asakeem, who put Kensi in the hospital for much of NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8. It appears he has turned informant, which didn't go over well with his fellow terrorists. Kensi, either, come to think of it. She's a big-picture woman, but this was pushing it. This case provided the opportunity not only to bring in characters old and new but also was a great excuse for undercover hi-jinks. You gotta love those undercover hi-jinks. The character making a return was Asakeem, who was now a valuable asset, much to Kensi's chagrin. He's still a devout Muslim. But perhaps his time in captivity has helped him to no longer view his new benefactor as The Great Satan. So this ragtag group of radicals, none of whom have apparently been extremely vetted, gathered in L.A. after their practice session with the Mexican contingent. Their target was Asakeem, because, well, he knows some of their dirty little secrets. But after a year in custody, wouldn't his info be just a tad dated? But's let not let details get in the way of the narrative. This Asakeem hunt allowed the squad to stage a kidnapping of him. Then Sam got to go undercover again, this time as a wealthy Muslim looking to smuggle Asakeem out of the country. Under the guise of intra-agency cooperation, the search for this vague jihadist group was also a great excuse to introduce Nell's overbearing older sister, Sydney, who works for Homeland Security. Nell explained to Eric in great detail how her sister treated her when they were younger. It was a hoot to see Nell, so often the calm voice of reason, exploding. Penelope? I always thought the name Nell fit her perfectly. She just looks like a Nell. Finally, Sydney got to see what Nell really does and was impressed by her both in Ops and in the field with Harley, blocking the terrorists' escape. I buy Sydney's tough-love explanation, that it's a hard world out there for women and that she was just toughening up Nell for what was to come. That seems to have worked out well, although she and Sydney should have hashed out their relationship sooner. I'm enjoying Harley, who has fit in well with the team. It was awesome when she took out the obnoxious Muslim poser with her head-scarf. What Muslim woman hasn't dreamed of doing that to the overbearing man in her life? Mosley even appeared to be softening. Her head didn't explode during Callen's latest over-the-top plan. She was tender with the boy Enrique and admitted to Sam that she doesn't even know where her son is. I'm sure there's more of that to follow. I felt sorry for Sam on his anniversary. Still, it's hard to keep a straight face when his new pet is a hungover sea lion he's nicknamed Otis. That's got to be the most exotic pet this TV season. There were a couple of significant missed opportunities this episode. I thought that when Kensi and Deeks sat down for lunch with Roberta and her friend, maybe some wedding plans might be made. But nope, duty called, and they side-stepped it again. Then, with an early Hetty scene, I thought that maybe that storyline was going somewhere. Maybe it is, but it's going glacially. It was great to see AJ Chegwidden again, as he and Callen conveniently broke into one of Hetty's homes at the same time. Now if only he and the NCIS team could work together to find Hetty. I find her plan for escape to be flawed. She's given her disciples all the bread crumbs they need to find her. But they need time to find her as well, and when they're solving cases, they're not tracking Hetty. Let's speed up the pace a bit. I want to see Hetty and Mosley playing off each other. View Slideshow: 17 Amazing Bottle Episodes of TV SPOILER ALERT: On NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 9, Callen's ex Joelle returns. Why? Good question. I thought she was used up after it was revealed that she was a CIA agent. But apparently, she's got one more episode in her. To research Joelle, watch NCIS: Los Angeles online. Want to see Sydney again? How about Asakeem? Otis? How soon should Hetty come back? Comment below.

  • SMILF Season 1 Episode 3 Review: HALF A SHEET CAKE & A BLUE-RASPBERRY SLUSHIESMILF Season 1 Episode 3 Review: HALF A SHEET CAKE & A BLUE-RASPBERRY SLUSHIE

Bridgette should stay off Craigslist when her finances are in dire straits.  On SMILF Season 1 Episode 3, the single mother realized she was at risk of getting evicted from her apartment and went to extreme measures to find some cash to keep a roof over her and Larry.  The revelation that Eliza was being paid to eat her favorite food on camera was hilarious. She was so enthusiastic about it because she got to do it all from the comfort of her home.  The money must have been fabulous because she was offering to give Bridgette a high amount. Eliza seemed like a guest star on SMILF Season 1 Episode 2.  It now appears she will become very friendly with Bridgette, but I hope she isn't the enabler for Bridgette to make terrible decisions.  You could tell Bridgette was hurting. She thought the acting gag she snagged on SMILF Season 1 Episode 1 was going to help lift some of the financial burdens from her life.  Turning to Craigslist was a dangerous way to make some fast money. She should have known there is no such thing as free. There are always strings attached, but she had her back against the wall.  She didn't want to take handouts because she wanted to feel like she'd saved her and Larry all on her own, and it would be good for her to know she did.  The man may have seemed decent out in the open, but the moment his hand moved towards Bridgette's groin area, the "strings attached" became very clear.  Bridgette had the right to punch him. He overstepped and tried to take advantage of her. He was looking for a quick thrill and tried to persuade Bridgette into going somewhere quiet with him.  I shudder to think what would've happened if she got in the car with him. Bridgette doesn't make the best decisions, so it was surprising that she remained out in the open with him.  Bridgette has been sexually assaulted in the past, so this experience probably brought all of that back for her. Watching her knock the man off of his feet was satisfying because he thought parting ways with some cash and buying her some crappy fast food would result in her letting him have his way with her.  Now that Bridgette has had that negative experience, I'm hoping she'll  stay well away from unorthodox means to make money. She needs to find a job that has security for her.  That may be difficult when she has Larry, but there will be a job out there for her that will work with her hectic schedule. Something tells me she's in no rush to return to working for Ally anytime soon.  Even though River is away at college, things were awkward enough with Ally thinking they were both lesbians the last time they met. Did anyone else notice that Bridgette was purposefully trying to get the landlord's son high to get him to forget about why he visited her apartment in the first place? Bridgette may make some of the worst decisions, but she is not a silly person. She knows very well when she needs to get something done, and she tried to get away with not paying her rent.  I loved all of the stuff with the vision board. Even though Nelson would like everyone to believe her life is perfect, seeing her in the workplace was heartbreaking because of the interview.  View Slideshow: 27 Terrific 2017 Shows Yet to Premiere The way he chatted with her during the interview meant he saw her as nothing more than an object, and Nelson picked up on it. You could tell it wasn't the first time this happened, and it probably won't be the last.  I wish we'd seen her get some revenge on the man, but lashing out at him while the cameras were rolling would've likely signaled the end of her career.  "HALF A SHEET CAKE & A BLUE-RASPBERRY SLUSHIE" was another solid episode of this Showtime comedy series. • The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 5 Review: The Big Scary UThe Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 5 Review: The Big Scary U

There's some serious trouble brewing within the ranks of the Saviors. On The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 5, we followed the lives of Negan and the Saviors before, during and after Rick's initial attack on the Sanctuary. While the first four episodes of the season were heavy on action, "The Big Scary U" took a significantly dialed back approach. But that didn't mean nothing fun or exciting happened during the hour. The meeting between Negan and his lieutenants with Gregory before Rick's attack made for an engrossing conversation. Simon was totally oblivious to how little pull Gregory actually had at the Hilltop, now that Maggie is the de facto leader. Things got uncomfortable quickly when Simon exerted his authority with the suggestion of killing everyone at the Hilltop should they refuse to stand down. Naturally, that didn't sit too well with the boss. We know that Simon is Negan's right-hand guy, yet this is the first time that we've seen these two on shaky ground. Not only was Negan unhappy with Simon forgetting his place, but the idea of threatening to wipe out an entire community would not work in the Savior's benefit.   The more communities that Negan has working for him, the better. Although. The Kingdom itself was essentially wiped out on The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 4, which is the opposite of what Negan is trying to establish. As much as Negan gets joy out of killing, he's more about making an example of people and using fear to get what he wants, i.e., Glenn and Abraham. Gregory: Negan, I don't like killing people any more than you do.Negan: I like killing people. Permalink: I like killing people. Added: November 16, 2017 While trapped in the Sanctuary after Alexandria's attack, Simon used the opportunity in an attempt to reveal the leak within the Saviors. Dwight did a good job deflecting and shifting the focus to working on a plan to get out of the Sanctuary. However, now Simon appears to be convinced that Eugene is the mole, which would be the obvious choice if I were in Simon's shoes.  Eugene is the only person originally aligned with Rick before being taken in by the Saviors, so if anyone would be a prime suspect, it's Eugene. Eugene now knows Dwight is the mole after noticing the same red paint from Dwight's freshly painted chess pieces were in the bag of guns taken from the armory. It didn't take much to put two and two together -- Eugene is an excellent observer. Does this mean Eugene will rat Dwight out? Not likely. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Dwight and Eugene work together and set up Simon as the mole. Simon appears to already be on thin ice with Negan as it is, so it would be a great opportunity for Dwight to use that situation to his advantage. The best way to get rid of the speculation, is to outright pin it on someone else -- and who better to try and pin it on than Negan's right-hand man? The best part of the episode was Negan and Father Gabriel's interaction while holed up in the trailer. I was extremely surprised by Negan's behavior while shooting the breeze with one of the guys that just attacked his home. Negan engaging Gabriel and seeing the banter between the two made for some great moments. It's not like they were going anywhere, so it was the perfect time for them to get acquainted with each other.  Negan: Your friend Rick is an assholeGabriel: You're an asshole. Permalink: Your friend Rick is an asshole. Added: November 16, 2017 Gabriel felt his purpose for being there was to take Negan's confession, and while Negan was incredibly reluctant to confess anything, he eventually caved. What I found amusing was how Gabriel called Negan out on all of his BS. And I highly doubt Negan has ever had anyone talk to him in that way without getting their head bashed in. Once Negan realized the likelihood that he may not make it out of there alive, he began to drop some juicy little nuggets about his past. I'm glad that The Walking Dead is finally beginning to peel back those layers and attempt to humanize Negan a bit. It's something the character has been seriously lacking when compared to past villains such as The Governor. And although we only scratched the surface, it was great to see Negan at is most vulnerable. We learned that before the apocalypse, Negan worked with children. That's a horrifying career choice for a guy who now enjoys the beating brains in of people who don't abide by his rules. That's not exactly the type of person I'd want caring for my son. We save people. Negan Permalink: We save people. Added: November 16, 2017 Negan also had a wife whom he fooled around on and later discovered was terminally ill. I found it interesting that he held up his bat while talking about his wife, asking Lucille for strength. What I took from that moment is that he was talking at his Louisville Slugger, but he was talking to Lucille. That suggests Lucille was the name of his late wife. It would make sense why the name he had given to his weapon of choice has such significant meaning to him. Hey, the Governor kept his walker daughter in a closet only occasionally taking her out to comb her hair. Who am I to judge? See, I killed the widow's husband and the ginger, but I didn't get them killed. That was your boy Rick. Negan Permalink: See, I killed the widow's husband and the ginger, but I didn't get them killed. That was your... Added: November 16, 2017 Father Gabriel taking advantage of Negan's moment of weakness and grabbing his gun was very surprising. It was very unlike his character to try and make such a bold move. Yet, Gabriel has grown a serious pair of cahones since he first met Rick on The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 2. As much as he's grown though, he's still a terrible shot. It was fun watching Negan and Gabriel use the walker camouflage and make it back to the Sanctuary. My only real gripe with the episode was how the horde seemingly overran Negan and Gabriel, yet a few moments later they showed up at the Sanctuary. It just didn't make any sense, and it felt as if a scene or two remained on the cutting room floor after the editing process. Go back and watch the scene again of Negan and Gabriel surrounded by walkers. There was no logical way out of that scenario. I suppose sometimes logic just needs to go out the window in certain cases. Unfortunately, Gabriel did get bit at some point during their escape since he was in pretty bad shape when Eugene went to check on him. As disappointed as I am in knowing that Gabriel's time is up (his death has been hinted at since The Walking Dead Season 7), his flashback at the church sealed his fate. The Walking Dead's trend of background characters getting killed after receiving important focus in an episode is the norm these days. So it shouldn't be much of a surprise that Seth Gilliam's tenure on the show is coming to an end. The Rick and Daryl brawl didn't add anything other than using it as a cheap plot device to destroy the big guns and take them out of the picture. We know Daryl wants to take the Saviors down at all costs, but it didn't need to culminate with Rick and Daryl trading blows. Do we need to see the two men throw down? All that work and nothing to show for it except for some new cuts and bruises. Other thoughts: Gabriel and Negan talking through the door in the trailer was brilliant. The way the whole scene was set up as if they were in a confessional was very well done. Negan punching Gabriel in the face after his sins were forgiven was pure gold. I'm glad the show finally addressed Maggie not having a primary care physician during her pregnancy. Will Eugene help Gabriel get Dr. Carson back to the hilltop? It was strange to see Negan so vulnerable as he talked about his late wife, but seeing those emotions on full display while giving us a brief glimpse into his past was terrific. Who was that guy spying on Rick? He might have been one of the Scavengers from Jadis' group, but I'm not quite sure. Where did that helicopter come from, where was it heading and who was in it!?!?!? Now it's your turn TV Fanatics! What did you think of "The Big Scary U"? Did you enjoy getting a glimpse into Negan's past? Do you think Simon will end up being set up as the mole within the Saviors? • Shameless Season 8 Episode 3 Review: God Bless Her Rotting SoulShameless Season 8 Episode 3 Review: God Bless Her Rotting Soul

You win some; you lose a lot.  That was the big takeaway from Shameless Season 8 Episode 3 in which the family continued to feel the wrath of the person who owned the meth, and it resulted in them losing a lot.  Fiona was right in her assessment that the rest of her family should have listened to her in the first instance. If you watch Shameless online, you already know that she's made her fair share of mistakes in the past, so she's an excellent person to go to for advice. Making everyone admit that she was right may have seemed a little out there, but she wanted them to take this as a lesson.  Fiona has been trying not to make the same mistakes she has made in the past, so it would not have made sense for just to let it go. Everyone is just lucky that Fiona was the one who buried her share with Monica.  However, it will be odd if there isn't any backlash because naturally, people will be questioning why Monica's final resting place has been disturbed and the family bought a bunch of shovels from Frank's place of work is a dead giveaway that it was them.  All of the stuff with Fiona's building was hilarious on "God Bless Her Rotting Soul." Nessa's girlfriend already proved she was jealous of Nessa's relationship with Fiona, so it was no surprise that she tried to get her friends in the building.  Lying about the building being littered with creatures was not the best way to go, and I dare say Fiona would have kicked her right out of the building if she was not friendly with Nessa.  It was rude on so many levels that Fiona had to contend with the woman over the price of an apartment she will not be living in. Fiona knows the building is not in best shape, but she also knows it's an up and coming area.  She knows the building's worth, and that's the best thing about this apartment storyline. Fiona spent years making money last when she was looking after her siblings.  It would have been fun to see what revenge she had in store for the person who wrote "thundercunt" on the walls and smeared them with feces. Who even does that?! If the tenant was willing to go to those measures to irk Fiona, there's no telling what else they could do.  Neil dumping Debbie was the best things he did during his short stint on the series. Sierra knew from the get-go that Debbie was only interested in him because of his disability.  She is an opportunist, and she exploited Neil for all he was worth without giving it a second thought. She used him for his disability allowance, board, and as a free babysitter.  The icing on the cake is that Debbie thought she was getting herself off the hook by having her friend care for him. The good thing about all of this is that now Neil has someone who is training to be a carer looking after him.  Sierra will be breathing a sigh of relief while Debbie will likely have another battle with the authorities to keep Franny in her care. Let's hope she doesn't spiral again because Debbie whining about how she's so put out all the time has run its course.  View Slideshow: 13 TV Characters You Do NOT Want Knocking At Your Door Lip helping Professor Youens was great. The professor has long been the one helping Lip and getting him to stay on the straight and narrow.  Despite the dear Professor falling asleep at the wheel and driving into a house, he's generally a great character. Lip returning the favor and taking him under his wing was needed.  It showed the true extent of Lip's gratitude and helped him give back to the man who paid for him to go to rehab. I'm not confident Youens will get the opportunity to stick around for much longer.  Five DUIs is a recipe for disaster and the fact that lawyers were hanging up the phone on him when they found out the truth was telling.  The Svetlana in prison storyline was lazily wrapped up, and it could have been so much better. Svetlana held the keys to the kingdom and could sell the bar because it was legally in her name.  The only satisfying conclusion would have been for Svetlana to be sent back to Russia or given a lengthy stint in jail. Agreeing to go back into business with the people who put her there was a bit nonsensical.  View Slideshow: 13 TV Sex Scenes We Can NEVER Unsee! Maybe Svetlana was thinking about the financial gain she could still make despite being one of three people managing the bar. There's always going to be a lack of trust between the three of them, and it would not surprise me if Svetlana had another trick up her sleeve.  She's a woman of many talents, and lying is like second nature to her.  I don't know what to make of the news that Kev's family was found and that Kev isn't his name after all. It will be fun to see where he came from because he's one of the better characters.  "God Bless Her Rotting Soul" was not my favorite episode of Shameless. It had its share of funny moments, but ending some of the plots that had the potential to run for several months is concerning.  What do you think about this episode? Sound off below! • Outlander Season 3 Episode 10 Review: Heaven and EarthOutlander Season 3 Episode 10 Review: Heaven and Earth

Claire and Jamie were torn apart. Again.  I'm pretty sure it's in the show bible that the lovers have to be ripped about at least twice each season, and Outlander Season 3 Episode 10 fulfilled that requirement. Luckily we didn't have to watch them fall into despondent depression this time. I'm not sure that I could have handled that.  No, this go-round saw Jamie and Claire much more focused. Claire's focus on stopping the typhus outbreak made sense, Jamie's attempts to mutiny were a little harder to understand. I get that he doesn't want to be separated from her again; that part makes sense. But this wasn't like when she got captured by Randall, or any of their escapades in France, or Culloden. There was no reason to assume that she was in any immediate danger. Rebelling against the captain the way he did just doesn't fit with Jamie's MO. Not having a plan? Not James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser.  I lost her once, Fergus. I canna lose her again. Jamie Permalink: I lost her once, Fergus. I canna lose her again. Added: November 19, 2017 Look at how he planned his escape from Ardsmuir, or the plan to stop the Comte's shipment that would have funded Charlie's war or his smuggling business. The man is a schemer, a planner, a master chess player.  And okay, he's lost his temper and acted rashly before, but not when it came to saving someone he loved. Attacking the captain and planning a mutiny would only impede his goal.  But even worse than this rash, completely out of character behavior was his treatment of Fergus.  Fergus: Non. I love her, too, Milord, but --Jamie: What good are you, you damn fool? Permalink: What good are you, you damn fool? Added: November 19, 2017 He was just cruel. There's no other word for it. The first time I watched the episode, I couldn't even bear to watch and just fast forwarded through Fergus' second visit. I mean, this is the boy that's supposed to be like a son to him, the boy that he risked permanent damage to his relationship with Claire to avenge. "What good are you?" Are you kidding me?  Clearly, the writer thought that having Jamie attack Fergus, another person for whom Jamie cares deeply, would reinforce just how much he loves Claire.  Jamie: I see I was right to withhold my blessing from you. Proves ye dinna ken what love is. Fergus: You do not mean that, Milord. How could you say that?Jamie: Because if you did, ye would move heaven and earth. You would risk arrest and death. Even hell. You would do it as easily as...the prick of a pin. Ye'd set me free from this cell to help me rescue the woman I love from her kidnappers. Until ye risk all, ye canna speak of love. Permalink: Because if you did, ye would move heaven and earth. You would risk arrest and death. Even... Added: November 19, 2017 But I don't think it worked. One of the hallmarks of a good relationship, a strong relationship, is that two people make each other better. If this is what loving Claire does to Jamie, inflicting pain on others, is that a good, true love? Not that some of the things he said to Fergus weren't damn romantic in their own way. I mean, his soliloquy about how one will do anything for the one the love was moving, even if it didn't make a lot of sense as a way to convince Fergus to comply with Jamie's demand.  Elias: Is there a secret to it?Claire: Secret?Elias: Remaining so calm in the face of so much death. Permalink: Remaining so calm in the face of so much death. Added: November 19, 2017 Claire handled the separation in a much more productive manner. She wasn't pleased about being pressed into service, but she was smart enough to realize that the situation wouldn't be helped by her pitching a fit and that there was little to no danger that she and her husband wouldn't be reunited.  Once she figured out that Jamie may be in danger, she tackled the problem logically and efficiently. Her plan to get Tompkins out of the way wasn't well thought out, but it was an attempt to solve the problem quietly and effectively. It also gave us a more nuanced look at how far Claire is willing to go for Jamie. We've seen her dedication to the Hippocratic oath when she boarded the Porpoise and when she tried to save her attacker, but she walked right up to the edge of ethical behavior imprisoning the man.  One of the things I dislike the most about the back half of the season being so rushed is that we get so little time with new characters. Elias and Annekje had minor roles to play, sure, but I really liked both of them and would liked to have had more time with both.  We also haven't really seen much of Fergus and Marsali together. The scene where she cares for his stump was touching, both for her care for him and his insistence that they stop before things went to far. Now if we could just get her to reevaluate her position on Claire... Jamie: What are you doing, lass?Marsali: Just give him your word. And he'll set you free. You canna see what he's done for you, can ye? Jamie: Raines?Marsali: No, Fergus.Jamie: What Fergus did, he did for you. Marsali: If you believe that, you dinna deserve to be let out of here. Permalink: If you believe that, you dinna deserve to be let out of here. Added: November 19, 2017 I'm hoping that happens on Outlander Season 3 Episode 11. The antepenultimate episode of the season starts with our OTP still separated, with Claire wandering through the mangroves of Hispaniola and Jamie apparently shipwrecked...somewhere.  That at least solves his problem with Captain Raines, but doesn't really get him any closer to Claire. But having lived through a disaster, maybe Marsali would be more open to having a healer in her family. The girl has finally stopped acting like a complete brat and that would be the last step in liking her.  Claire: Half the men on this fucking ship are dying of typhoid, and this bloody fool has almost drank himself to death on the alcohol I need to stop the goddamn fever from spreading! [pause as the men look stunned] I'm sorry, Mr. Pound. Didn't mean to offend your tender ears.Elias: Oh, I've heard many such things before, madam, but not from a gentlewoman. Permalink: Oh, I've heard many such things before, madam, but not from a gentlewoman. Added: November 19, 2017 If you're not warming to Jamie's stepdaughter, maybe you need to watch Outlander online and watch her scenes again. When she's not calling Claire a "whoooooorrrrre," she's not so bad.  Disagree? Let us know what you think in the comments section! • Riverdale Round Table: The Art of WarRiverdale Round Table: The Art of War

The Southside Serpents were arrested during a school raid, Betty and Veronica went on a mission to find the Sugar Man, and Penelope turned over a new leaf on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 6. Below, TV Fanatics Paul Dailly, Jack Ori and Justin Carreiro debate Penelope's new start with Cheryl, Archie getting the Ghoulies arrested, and the future of the jingle jangle drug epidemic. 1. Penelope Blossom didn't believe Cheryl about Nick trying to rape her, but Veronica's parents trusted her wholeheartedly. Why do you think both families reacted differently? Paul: Penelope has always treated Cheryl like something she would scrape off of her shoe. It's horrible. Despite Hiram and Hermione being wicked, they would move mountains for their daughter. Jack: I'm with Paul on this one. Cheryl is literally the redheaded stepchild, the one who Penelope doesn't seem to have any use for and treats like trash. The Lodges love and would do anything to protect their daughter, despite their general lack of morals. Justin: Penelope has never valued Cheryl's word; she looks at her daughter as a drama queen and someone who is after attention. She will never believe her because she doesn't trust or like her. Veronica's parents, on the other hand, love their daughter. She is their joy, and nothing will change that. 2. Mayor McCoy and Sheriff Keller raided Southside High and arrested the Southside Serpents. Why do you think it took this long for them to reach their final straw and do something? Paul: Meh. This only seemed to come after Mayor McCoy found out Josie was indulging in some jingle jangle outside of classes. Would Mayor McCoy have bothered with the raid if Josie was not taking the drug? I think not. Jack: Yep. Mayor McCoy was out for revenge because her daughter was "corrupted" by the Serpents and their jingle jangle. She couldn't care less about stopping the drug trade otherwise. Justin: I agree with the others. If Josie had not been caught using jingle jangle too, Mayor McCoy would never have done the raid. It was all words and political peace until it happened to her family. Watch Riverdale Season 2 Episode 6 Online 3. Penelope burned the hush money from the St. Clairs. Will her relationship with Cheryl start to improve or could it just be temporary? Paul: Everything is temporary with Penelope. It's like one step forward with her and then two back. It's horrible to watch because we know how emotionally unstable Cheryl is. Jack: Penelope seems to need to be constantly reminded that her daughter has the upper hand. Next time Cheryl has a problem she's going to have to force her mother's hand all over again. Justin: Cheryl and Penelope's relationship will never be perfect. However, I do have hope that it will start to get better from this point. Penelope opened herself up, even just a little bit, to show her daughter that she cares about her. 4. Archie called the police to get the Ghoulies arrested. Do you think Jughead is right in thinking they'll be back for revenge against him? Paul: For sure. This was nothing more than a short-term solution, and it's going to come back and bite them. Jack: This was a bad idea. Of course, there was a chance the copes could stop the drag race but Archie forcing it is just going to cause trouble. The Ghoulies won't be in jail long and rumors are already spreading that Jughead was behind the police action, which won't end well for him. Since his teacher was also arrested, it won't take long for Jughead to be labeled a snitch, which could put his life in danger. Justin: Archie is in danger. Once the Ghoulies are freed, he will be their next target. And, because of his actions, others will be harmed too. This was another stupid move by Archie. 5. Jughead's teacher was revealed to be the Sugar Man. Will his arrest/death stop the epidemic of jingle jangle in Riverdale? Paul: No way. Someone new will take over from the teacher. I was shocked to the core by the revelation about the teacher. Bravo, writers. Jack: Of course not. The whole idea that all they need to do is catch one drug dealer and the problem goes away is ludicrous. The problems behind the drug problems in Riverdale (i.e., the rivalry between North and Southside, the reasons people are using jingle jangle, etc.) are not being addressed at all. There is likely going to be a struggle for control of the drug trade now. Justin: I do think it will slow down the epidemic. While it won't be finished until the major issues are discussed, having the person who managed the trafficking removed will mess up the supply chain. 6. Betty challenged The Black Hood's power and wants to capture him once and for all. Share your thoughts of this rivalry. Paul: I laughed at the conversation. The Black Hood knows where Polly is, so what's stopping him from getting Betty back in line by taking her out? Silly move, Betty. Jack: I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, like Paul said, it was foolish of Betty. But on the other hand, after seeing her hurt everyone she loves by giving in to The Black Hood's blackmail, I loved seeing her gain strength and try to turn the tables. Justin: Betty is a new person, and she's out for revenge. We've seen her solve bigger mysteries than this, and being the daughter of Alice Cooper means that she has limitless determination. While The Black Hood is dangerous, he should be scared. Missed the latest episode of Riverdale? You can watch Riverdale online via TV Fanatic. Come back here and join the discussion. • Days of Our Lives Round Table: Did JJ Really See Theo?Days of Our Lives Round Table: Did JJ Really See Theo?

Much of Salem suffered after Theo was shot, Kate took action to keep from being blamed, and Will insisted he was really EJ Dimera on Days of Our Lives. Our TV Fanatics Jack Ori and Christine Orlando are joined by Wendylou and Leslie from MyHourglass a Days of Our Lives fan forum to debate JJ seeing Theo's face, Kate blackmailing Tripp, Susan and Sami's fight, who will get through to Will and why Paul is the most hated man in Salem! Do you think that JJ really did see Theo’s face as he took the shot, or is he simply remembering it that way now that he knows it was Theo? Wendylou: No. I don't think he saw his face. People often mis-remember things that happened in a stressful moment. Jack: I don't think JJ is remembering correctly. I think he is suffering from some PTSD related to knowing he potentially took a life along with it being drilled into his head by Abe and Lani that he shot Theo on purpose, so his guilt and fear are causing him to remember incorrectly. Leslie: I can't see how JJ saw his face. It was literally a split second and he is just doubting himself from the guilt right now. Christine: People will frequently swear to something they aren't remembering correctly. I agree that Abe has planted the thought in JJ's head and the guilt and trauma have helped it grow. This is a horrible tragedy but it wasn't JJ's fault on any level.  Could Tripp have done anything other than given Kate that cell phone? What should he do now? Wendylou: It certainly seems like he had little choice. I DO think there's nothing stopping him from secretly tipping off the police though. I am glad he gave her the phone to protect Kayla and not himself. Jack: I wish Tripp had recorded Kate's demands instead of giving in. I don't know why no one ever thinks of that. It would have been especially awesome for him to have unlocked Theo's phone once he got the passcode from Claire and recorded Kate's threats on Theo's phone then handed the phone over to the police. Tripp should also, at this point, tell Steve under the guise of wanting him to warn Kayla about Kate but really so Steve can investigate this. Leslie: A real techie could still find those deleted messages, but Kate sure guilted him into it. I hope now he goes to Steve and tells him the whole truth of what happened. Steve may have a plan of how to get even. Christine: Tripp really didn't have a chance against Kate. She's got decades of blackmail and manipulation under her built.  But he should go to Steve and let him know what happened. Steve and Kayla need to know that Kate knows the truth, and Steve can let Hope know to have tech pull up the deleted messages, which they can certainly do.  Given what Susan said to Sami, did she deserve that punch? Wendylou: It was pretty disgusting. I think that combined with stealing Will and poisoning him against her was not smart on Susan's part. It's hard to blame Sami for losing it for a minute. Jack: This was one time I didn't blame Sami for losing her temper. I'd prefer not to see Sami be endlessly paraded in and out of jail, but Susan was definitely goading her, even if Sami should be able to control her temper by now. Leslie: Absolutely. Susan is cruel and mean, mean, mean! Christine: I don't want to condone violence, but I think almost anyone would have punched Susan after that little speech.  What or whom do you think will finally get through to Will? Wendylou: I think seeing his daughter should spark a memory in him. I'm surprised no one at least tried to show him a picture of her with him. Jack: I think the fact that these people are so darn persistent and Susan is not giving him answers to his questions is making him wonder what's really going on. Also maybe if he goes back to Salem, particularly if he goes to the Dimera mansion and meets Andre, it will do something for him. It would be sweet if seeing Ari break the brainwashing but I hate to see her be put through this in case it doesn't. Leslie: I believe going back to Salem, seeing stuff on a computer, pictures, Arianna & maybe even Ben. Christine: I think we all hope that Ari gets through to him if nothing else does, but I think it was silly not to have Marlena speak to Will. Not only were the two very close, but Marlena's a psychiatrist. Let her help! Are people making too much of Paul hiding that Will was alive for less than a day? Wendylou: Yes! Especially Sami of all people. This woman has spent half her life scheming and lying and she's indignant with Paul's momentary weakness? Please. I also think Sonny is being very selfish. Paul has been so understanding and generous through all of this and Sonny has barely thought of what he's going though. I honestly feel right now like Paul is too good for Sonny. Jack: Yes. Paul did need some time to process and he did do the right thing in the end. I'm surprised that almost NO ONE has tried to justify Paul's behavior and, except for John, seem to be getting in line to paint him as a villain. Leslie: Absolutely. If they had put themselves in Paul's shoes, they would have the same struggle he dealt with. Plus it was such a short time and he knew he couldn't live with that lie. Christine: Paul kept that news to himself for less than a day. Does that even quantify as a secret in Salem? Sami is the biggest hypocrite as she has kept huge secrets for years! And Paul deserves so much better from Sonny. Maybe it's just easier for Sonny to be mad at Paul so that he doesn't need to feel like the bad guy himself for wanting to go back to Will. What, if anything, disappointed you this week in Salem? Wendylou: It was a pretty good week so there weren't many things but I definitely think they showed Theo's shooting scenes way too many times. They were powerful and memorable enough on their own. We didn't need to see them over and over. I also thought Claire's repeated fainting episodes were a bit silly. Jack: I thought John gave Paul some bad advice. Competing with Will and fighting for Sonny has never done Paul any favors, ever. Also, while I loved seeing his family support him, I kind of wish Marlena had been among the visitors to the scene of Theo's shooting to try to help JJ, especially since Jen is worried about his mental state. Finally, Abe, get over yourself already. Theo is not blameless in this, and Abe is just alienating and accusing EVERYONE of conspiring to hurt his son. As a former cop, Abe should be able to see both sides a little more easily than he does, despite his grief and anger over Theo's condition. Plus it was ridiculous for him to tell Lani that she couldn't speak about what happened since she wasn't there when Theo was shot, then proceeded to say in the next breath that what they did know was that JJ was in the wrong when he wasn't there either. Leslie: So far, everyone blaming Andre for Theo being shot & also blaming him for the sabotage of DiMera Enterprises. You can see how hurt he was that even Chad believed the worst about him. Christine: It was a good week overall, but Claire's fainting spells were a little over the top.  And I expect better from Abe being that he was a cop for decades. JJ followed procedure, but Abe was ordering Hope to break it in order to railroad JJ, just so he could believe that Theo was completely blameless.  What was your favorite quote, scene or storyline for the week on Days of Our Lives? Wendylou: Between Will and Theo/JJ's storylines I thought this was a really dramatic, soapy week. I was honestly pretty impressed with the whole week. I really enjoyed Abby and JJ's scenes as well as Eric and Jen. Jack: So much good stuff happening in the aftermath of Theo's shooting! JJ had some powerful scenes this week. I was especially thrilled that he told Jennifer that they can't pretend nothing happened, which is an argument I've been wanting him to have with her since 2014 or so. JJ: Mom, just leave me alone, okay?Jennifer: JJ, please, just come home with me. Please!JJ: No! Jennifer: Chad will let us know if anything happens. Please just go with me.JJ: Don't you get it? We can't just act like nothing happened.Jennifer: I'm not doing that.JJ: I shot him. I put him in a coma. I have to live with that for the rest of my life. Permalink: I shot him. I put him in a coma. I have to live with that for the rest of my life. Added: November 17, 2017 On the lighter side, that cop in Memphis' summary of Sami's seemingly ludicrous claims in this Days of Our Lives quote was hilarious. Sami: It's so unfair. I can't believe I had to spend the night in jail. I didn't do anything wrong.Cop: Oh, you mean aside from assaulting a woman and giving her a black eye?Sami: That woman kidnapped my son and held him against his will and oh, I have to be the one to go to jail, and she gets to go free.Cop: And this young man you claim was kidnapped? He's dead.Sami: No, my son is not dead. As it turns out, he's alive.Cop: Okay, so let me see if I can get this straight. Your son, Will Horton, was raised from the dead, brainwashed, now he has amnesia, and thinks he is a guy named EJ Dimera, who by the way you used to be married to. Permalink: Okay, so let me see if I can get this straight. Your son, Will Horton, was raised from the... Added: November 17, 2017 Leslie: I like how Eric has been there for Jennifer & her family. The friendship between these two is so sweet and caring. It is so much better seeing Eric this way instead of moping over Nicole. Christine: I loved how Abigail was there for her brother, and Eric was supportive of Jennifer. I also appreciated the conversation between Hope and Jennifer. I love it when they remember that these women are cousins and life long friends. Want to chat more about the happenings in Salem? Check out Jack Ori's Days of Our Lives review here at TV Fanatic. Well that was quick. Hours after Gabby Douglas ignited a firestorm on the Internet after victim-shaming teammate Aly Raisman for “dressing provocatively,” the Olympic champion apologized for her comments. This elicited a response from Douglas who essentially victim-shamed her, saying it is women’s “responsibility to dress modestly.” Douglas continued to defend her statements on social media and even fellow gymnast Simone Biles chimed in to condemn her. A few hours later Douglas apologized. But damage has been done. Can’t have your cake and eat it too Gabby. You clearly said what you said — no one “misunderstood” anything. I am so disappointed in her but I hope this is a teachable moment. Many women are not aware that misogyny throughout the years have normalized the negative way they see themselves. • Masked Scheduler: ‘American Idol’ on Sunday is a risk worth taking for ABCMasked Scheduler: ‘American Idol’ on Sunday is a risk worth taking for ABC

“American Idol” was both the most challenging and most rewarding show of my scheduling career. It dominated the television landscape for more than a decade, and we always handled the show with respect. I know that this is hard to believe, but we never got overly excited about having the behemoth on our schedule at FOX. We always stayed focused and realized that we had a heavy responsibility to keep the “Death Star” strong and vital. At NBC, we were a far more arrogant and haughty crew, but at FOX there was not a long history of success — there was even a bit of a fear of it among some of the long-time FOX execs. We never took “Idol” for granted. Once we realized we had something beyond a hit on our hands, our first decision was to limit “Idol” to once a year. Next, we expanded the audition shows because we realized that those brought in more men. Once the competition started, the show generally skewed more female and older. We continued to add more hours to the show and permanently made the results show an hour. It wasn’t until the 10th season that we finally moved “Idol” to Wednesday/Thursday, after having gone Tuesday/Wednesday for the prior seasons. We wanted to give ourselves more consecutive nights of scripted series, and we also wanted “Idol” on Thursday, which still was the most valuable night for advertisers due to theatrical and automotive money. Ratings for “Idol” were starting to dip, and we realized it was now or never in terms of the move. We weren’t expecting the show’s ratings to improve, and in the first season of the change they were fairly steady. We had lots of fun threatening to move “Idol.” We would generally announce the “Idol” schedule in November, and I would get several nasty calls from the competition. Truth be told, in years prior to the move I encouraged some of the younger execs to spread the word that we were moving the show. One of the traditions during the “Idol” years was, in the scheduling room, Rupert Murdoch would go up to the board and put “AI” on Sunday night. His thinking was that “Idol” was a family show, and Sunday 7-9 p.m. would be an ideal time period for it to reach that segment. We would give Rupert the arguments against this move: We had an established block of animated series that gave us a unique 18-34 audience with a healthy dollop on men. It would require so many scheduling moves to accommodate “Idol” that it would probably bring down the schedule. We made it clear to Rupert that “Idol,” like all TV shows, was getting older. It was drawing more 50+ adults each season, and you can’t unscramble the egg in television. Finally, we felt that reality competition works better during the work week so that people could talk about it the day of and the day after the show. Rupert wanted us to make the move, and as we did on other occasions, we sort of ignored him and waited for him to move on to something else. Well, Rupert will get to find out if he was on to something now that ABC has announced that its revived “American Idol” will air on Sunday nights starting in mid-March. I have not talked to my pals over at ABC, so I’m pretty much in the dark on how this decision was made. I also have no idea about the structure of the show and whether it will go beyond May. As was the case with our Sunday, ABC has an established Monday night reality zone with “Dancing With the Stars” and the “Bachelor”/”Bachelorette” franchises. Putting “Idol” on Sunday will give them a solid two nights of reality completion. They have established structures on Tuesday through Thursday, so for them, Sunday makes sense. I have no idea if they will be doing a results show. If they are, they may be smart to make it a half-hour and try to build a comedy hammocked between “Idol” at 8 and “DWTS” or “The Bachelor” at 9. Scheduling still matters. My two issues with this move would be, as discussed above, less “water-cooler” conversation the day of the show and, secondly, starting it so close to daylight saving, time when TV usage levels dip. (In fact, people will set their clocks forward the night before “Idol’s” March 11 premiere.) This could be especially problematic on Sunday night. I’m sure ABC has spent lots of time figuring this out, and I’m rooting for “Idol” to succeed because, honestly, I don’t know why FOX walked away from the show. I hope I answered your questions. We never consulted Matt Groening about a Sunday “Idol” move because we never were going to do it. Also, I don’t think there is much overlap between NBA Playoffs and “Idol,” so there’s little promotional value for either show. If you have more questions on this, it’s masked.scheduler@gmail.com and @maskedscheduler on Twitter.

  • ‘American Idol’ comes to ABC Sundays in March‘American Idol’ comes to ABC Sundays in March

ABC has set a premiere date for its revival of “American Idol,” and as a lot of schedule-watchers suspected, it will make its home on Sunday night. “Idol” will debut at 8 p.m. ET/PT Sunday, March 11. As it did for most of its 15-season run on FOX, the show will run for two hours. The network hasn’t said yet what will occupy the hours before and after it; “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Shark Tank” currently run from 8-10 p.m. on Sunday. “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest announced the premiere date Monday morning on his daytime show, “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” The Sunday-night home for “Idol” will allow Seacrest to make the cross-country trip from “Live’s” home in New York for “Idol” tapings in Los Angeles once the early rounds of the show are over. Seacrest will be joined on the show by judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. ABC and “Idol’s” producers haven’t said if they’ve tinkered with the show’s format at all for its new home. Sunday nights have been a struggle for ABC in the past couple of seasons, so “Idol” will almost certainly give the network a ratings boost on the night come spring. “Shark Tank” is the net’s top-rated show on the night at the moment, but it averages just a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 for its initial airing. The final season of “Idol” on FOX in 2015-16 averaged a 2.2 — far from its heights in the mid-2000s but a number ABC would be thrilled to have now.

With a week left until “American Idol” auditions are due to start, the show has confirmed Luke Bryan as a second judge, sources tell Variety. The country star will join Katy Perry for the series’ reboot on ABC. While the third spot has yet to be locked down, word from inside the production is that “Idol” will stick with a panel of three and not four judges. Lionel Richie, who was reported to have been in advanced talks to join the show, appears to no longer be in the running. Other artists considered for the panel included Charlie Puth and Keith Urban, though it looks unlikely that either will round out the judges’ table. ABC declined to comment on Bryan’s deal. ABC’s revival of the long-running Fox series has been slowly taking shape since it was announced in May. Perry was revealed to be a judge shortly after the deal at ABC was made, for a salary of $25 million. Ryan Seacrest, who hosted every season of the original “American Idol,” is returning to the show, and told reporters backstage at this weekend’s iHeartRadio Music Festival that an announcement about judges is expected imminently. “American Idol” is slated to premiere in early March, launching its debut episode shortly after the Oscars, which will be held on March 4. It is unclear where the show will sit on ABC’s primetime schedule, though it is believed to be airing on Sunday and Monday nights. Luke Bryan, who has released five albums since 2007, has seen his last three releases debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Album charts. He is set to be honored on CMT’s “Artists of the Year” special on Oct. 18, joining Chris Stapleton, Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, and Sam Hunt on the broadcast. Variety has reached out to Bryan’s rep for comment. The post Luke Bryan signs on to judge ‘American Idol’ appeared first on Today's Evil Beet Gossip.

  • Eurovision still hoping for US versionEurovision still hoping for US version

Eurovision bosses have not ruled out a US version of the famed song contest which could potentially see a “state vs. state” competition. It’s an idea that has been previously floated, given the success of American Idol, but did not proceed. ESC Executive Supervisor Jon Ola Sand told Eurovision Fan House there were still big hopes for the brand beyond Europe: “We have already launched an initiative in Asia, and this is done in conjunction with our Australian partner, SBS, who participates in the ESC. “We are working with them to stage a similar concept to Eurovision in Asia, essentially to have a Eurovision Asia. In addition, we also broadcast the ESC in several markets in that region, Australia is one of them, China has been on board to showcase the Eurovision Song Contest, New Zealand has been on board, and when it comes to the US we also have a deal there with the broadcaster Viacom to broadcast Eurovision in the US,” he said. “We also want to see if it’s possible to create an American version of the Eurovision Song Contest, although we haven’t concluded that yet. This is a long term strategy for sure to see how far outside of Europe the brand can reach.” I just don’t reckon America could do the camp anywhere near as well…
